The Return of Grunge?

Like many of you I was a child of the 90s. 1993 was the year that first started caring about fashion, hair, makeup, and style. It was the height of grunge.

I owned more plaid print shirts, ripped jean shorts, baby doll dresses, and doc martens than I care to admit. I even had a “boyfriend” in 7th grade who thought he was a mini Kurt Cobain. I thought we were so cute.

I wish I had picture to show you of me in this era. I'll have to dig up those "awkward teen years" pics next time I go home. Ha!

Although I was no Angela Chase, I did have a huge crush on Jordan Catalano. (gosh, I loved the teen-angst-ridden show, "My My So-Called Life", didn't you?)

I’m calling it now. Grunge. Is. Coming. Back. Grunge emerged out of the early 90s recession, and the same pattern is starting to repeat itself.

As the current 80s trend is waning we’re moving from this:

To this:

And apparently I’m not the only one I’m not the only one. See here, here, and here.

Celebs are already getting into it... check out Taylor Momsen rocking the grunge look with an oversized plaid shirt, messed-up hair and micro miniskirt.

Obviously grunge clothing was tied to the music of the era. Well grunge is even making a comeback in music. Has anyone heard “Panic Switch” by Silversun Pickups on any rock stations lately? The sound of that song definitely takes me back to my teen years.

I think that if grunge does make a comeback, it may be a little cuter this time around (let's hope!). Check out this shirt I just found at Forever21.com:

Ohh and a cute Baby Doll dress:

The return of grunge... are you anxiously awaiting it? Or dreading it?

I remember watching My So Called Life and just having absolutely NO idea what was going on. I've recently considered catching up on the DVDs since I'd probably be more clued in by now. I was probably not even 10 years old at that point, and would "sneak" watching MTV (I wasn't allowed to watch it) when my mom and dad weren't around. Even still, I love the 90s! But I really am not a fan of the TOTAL grunge look (Taylor Momsen pic) but I do like the more girly approach, as in that Forever 21 shirt! Hmm....we'll see where this trend goes I guess!

DREADING! Nobody looks good in dumpy clothes. Ha!

Ugh...grunge. Yuck. Nothing is less flattering - on women, especially! I recall thinking I was SO cool with some big baggy jeans and a big shirt. Ick.

As for My So-Called Life, though...LOVED IT! I totally miss it. Still. I may need to rent and watch again...I'm sure I'll pick up on even more stuff these days. But yeah. jordan Catalano was a HOTTIE.

I am so with you that grunge is coming back. Fashion shows are already stepping away from heels and moving to Oxfords (preppy grunge?).

I was totally into grunge back then. Huge baggy jeans, my sisters over-sized flannels, curly hair flowing and wishing I was Angela so I could smooch just a little of Jordan Catalano. Man was he hot.

At least now they have flannel shirt dresses instead of flannels with baggy jeans, and instead of baggy ripped jeans, we have skinny ones. Much cuter than before and I'm all over it.

I am definitely digging the plaid! There is something about jeans/plaid shirt that scream out rugged!

I was a junior & then a senior in high school at the height of grunge and rocked the Doc Marten's, I had a ton of flannel and even at one point a necklace with a skull! Oh my, after high school I did a complete turn around and became completely girly which is wear I still am today pretty much. I think some plaid, girly shirts are nice but I'll never go back!

I loved my so called life. Speaking of that show, i recently saw her gay friend in a movie (dang it, I can't remember what it was). But, you're so right. If it comes back, it should come back in more female flattering styles.

My goodness your right grunge is coming back. I even have a grunge sort of button up shirt. Your so right. Yikes the 90's coming back!!! Scary. But the 80's and 70's have made there rounds in the past 10 years so the 90's are in full swing for 2010 I think you might be right.
All I know is I'm not putting on any doc martins ever again. No matter what!

Wow. I think that you're right! I have to say that I am dreading the return of grunge (so I will probably have to bypass this trend). I knew the over-the-top girly stuff couldn't last forever, though.

While I am glad the 80s fashions are on the way out, I'm not sure how I feel about this fall's fashion either. I am a fan of the plaid but that's about it. Loved MSCL! Jordan was sooooooooooo hot!

I dont know how I feel about the whole grunge look, but I definitely think that plaid shirt from F21 is as cute as can be!

I think your examples of cute "grunge" are good...the others...not so much :)

I'm not a fan, but I'm sure there will be a new spin on it so who knows?! Maybe I will become a fan.

I loved My So Called Life!!!! Love it! I even tried by the season, but apparently it's not made any more so the ones on ebay were super expensive..

Too bad my so called life was only on for one season

I'm slowly getting the hang of it.

I like the plaid not so sure on the whole grunge idea.

Ah, Jordan Catalano. Remember how it was always "Jordan Catalano", never "Jordan" or "Catalano" or "that moody guy with the stringy hair who is somehow still totally hot"?

I'm into the plaids and baby doll dresses coming back, but Doc Martens don't need to see the light of day again. And, yes, of course I wore them back then!

You're right... it's definitely making a return! I'm not keen on the oversized checked shirts - I won't be giving in to that trend!

I grew up on the beach, so I totally missed out on the grunge-movement, due to it was WAY more popular for me to have a killer bikini or sundress. =( No one told me I was missing out a huge fashion trend when I was 12! But, I'm totally excited about it coming back, because now I'll get to enjoy it... finally!! Lame, I know, but c'est la vie! ;)

I've just started blogging, and I love yours! You are so right about the return of grunge. Can't say I'm the biggest fan, but hopefully they will improve it! Maybe, right? :)

Can I say that I'm kind of HAPPY that the '80's flashback inspired look is on its way out???? Bye-bye skinny jeans.

I totally think Grunge will make a mini-comeback and be used as inspiration. So it probably won't come on as a literal copy.
But if it does, I still have a plaid Abercrombie shirt from 1992 in my closet! (Really) I'll wear it with some baggy jeans, and Birkenstocks with socks. And yeah, don't forget the long curly hair!
I was 16 when Pearl Jam and Nirvana were big, and it was such a fun time for me. I wasn't totally grunged-out then, but I had my share of flannel, Birkenstocks, and baggy jeans! You know what they say - everything old is new again. Seems like it comes in about 20 year cycles!

Wow! Grunge coming back..yeah I see some of it. Actually I was coming out of high school and going into college when it was in full swing. From many of the comments here, a lot of the ladies are dreading the return of grunge..but I see that there are more "tailored" styles of clothing with the grunge look. To be honest, I like the grunge style because it had the courage to shun the "synthetic, overly materialistic" fashion that we have seen in recent years and even now. It is great to look good, we have become way to stuck on ourselves and put "style" over substance. So, for that reason...no, I am not fearing grunge at all. I may not wear the clothing a lot, but I respect it.
