Destinations Revealed...

A couple of days ago I shared my travel history and the countries that are on my "must-vist" list.

So where are we traveling to in May 2010?

Here are some hints:

So If you guessed Germany and Italy, you're right!

We're going to Munich, Venice, Florence, Tuscany, and Rome!

The trip will be a total of 18 days including air travel time. Here is our tentative itinerary:

(Yes, I use excel for EVERYTHING)

Thanks to my extensive business traveling, I have bunch of Starwood points that we're going to use for accomodations. So that is a large part of the reason we chose the cities that we did for the time that we did (For example: In Rome we can stay five nights for the points of four!)

I'd love to hear any travel advice for southern Germany and Italy. Places to see, things to do!

Also, since we'll be in Rome longest, I'm looking for a fun day trip to take out of Rome. Any recommendations?

What an amazing trip!! Funny side note, my brother and SIL are going to be in Europe those same dates. Must have been running some good May deals!

I have spent a lot of time in Italy (9 months living there and travelling around), so if you have ANY questions, please email me! I spent a long weekend in Munich too and loved it. We took a day trip to Dakau (I think that's how you spell it. It's one of the concentration camps) and it was really interesting. Orvieto or Tivoli are great day trips from Rome. I have a link in my blog to all of our honeymoon posts and there are a few about Rome.

Enjoy! I lived in Europe for 8 years and I'm taking a trip to Munich & Prauge this fall.

Munich: Take Dan's (Mike's?) bike tour- great way to see the city. Have lunch or dinner near the Glockenspiel. The churches in Munich are amazing so give yourself some time to wander. Visit a beer house or five!

Rome: Paying for a private tour of the Vatican is the BEST way to see it. Otherwise you get lost in the crowds & lines. The tour is a little pricey but definitely worth it. Make time for gelato at sunset by the Trevi fountain!

Your trip sounds amazing! I have been to Europe but not to Germany or Italy. They are on the top of my list of places I want to travel to.

Rome is my favorite city in the world!!! Take comfy shoes and be prepared to see it all!!! We did an easy bus tour from Rome to Capri. A beautiful place to visit for a day... That's a long time to be in Venice...don't plan to get there too early the first day - you really only need one full day and night there. From Florence, you can do a train to the Cinque Terra for the day, too. We did that, and switched trains in Piza long enough to see the leaning tower, then were on our way again. You'll LOVE LOVE LOVE it there!

Wow! Such an amazing trip; I'm officially jealous!

Florence is one of my favorite cities ever!!! I would definitely recommend staying there longer than Venice (which is nice but not enough stuff to do across several days, IMO). You are going to have SO MUCH fun!!!!

OH MY GOSH. Amazing!!! I am so jealous. You will have the best time! Rome is amazing, and so is Florence. It's a little bit of a train ride, but I highly recommend getting to Cinque Terre. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen - on the Italian Riviera. Gorgeous!

I went to Italy in high school, although I honestly don't remember a lot of the details. I will say that your itinerary looks awfully exciting, and I'm sure you guys will wind up having a blast!

I second going to Capri and Pisa. Also, to the fact that you don't need to spend a long time in Venice to get the gist. It felt like one giant overpriced tourist trap. Maybe make one or two of those days planned for Venice as flex days for a side trip to the Riveria from Rome.

I went to Munich about 10 years ago. It is such a fun city! You have to visit the beer houses where all the locals will be singing and laughing (hopefully). There are absolutely beautiful, ornate castles in the outlying areas-I visited 3 and they were worth it. Also, you have to try the rhubarb pastries-I was skeptical at first since I'm not a big rhubarb fan but a local suggested it and I wasn't disappointed.

I've never been to Italy but Munchen is one of my favorites cities in the world (Berlin is the best in my opinion).
If you like museums, you must go the Pinacoteques. There is the Hofbrau haus, it is a typical beer garden (it is amazing all the safety boxes for beer cups). At Hof Brau Ball Room was the place where Hitt*ler launched himself in the politic life, before he became the monster he was. The Marian Platz (if I am not mistaking the name), it the place where they have the Christmas market, but during the summer is really alive all day. There are plenty of Catholic churches to visit. The Teddy Bear Museum is such a wonderful place....
There is a concentration camp that is open to visitors just outside of the city. I wanted to go, but my husband didn't like the idea, so we didn't go.
There is the English Gardens and so much more....

I hope you have a wonderful trip.

When you're in Munich, I'd recommend taking a "beer tour". The one we took originated at the main train station and it was so fun, with lots of young people (both Americans and Europeans). It was the perfect way to see a few different beer houses and learn about the history of beer in Munich and Germany. Lots of beer and food was included so it was perfect! We even went to a beer museum. Eat lots of bavarian bretzels for me!

Munich is just sooo much more than beer, Hofbräuhaus and Brezeln, trust me. Go see the English Garden, it's a must. If you have the time and the weather is fine, take the time to sit down in one of the small cafés and have a macchiato. Also definately worth visiting is the former concentration camp + museum in Dachau. Very interesting.

Enjoy your trip!
