I'm actually ashamed to admit that I've lived in Los Angeles for almost 9 years, and I've never been on hike in LA.
Don't get me wrong -- it's not that I don't do outdoorsy stuff here. I've been on hundreds of walks along the beach. Bike rides. Ski trips. You name it. Just no hikes.
The Mr. and I love to go hiking when we visit his parents in Oregon or mine in San Diego. So we figured it was high time to do a hike in LA.
Then I realized that I have to idea where people hike in LA. To me LA is one giant urban jungle, not exactly conclusive to nature hikes.
So I ordered copy of 101 Hikes in Southern California.
It's filled with great hikes all around LA and Southern California complete with descriptions and maps. And today we did our first one! We hiked Temescal Canyon in Pacific Palisades.
It was beautiful! It's just minutes from urban Santa Monica, but it feels like you're in the real wilderness. Birds chirping. Trees arched over the trails. A small waterfall. So peaceful.

Oh and did I mention the sweeping vistas from the top?

Looks like I can cross this one off of my Baby Bucket List. I've completed my first hike in LA, and it definitely won't be my last!
Do you hike in your home town? What kind of hikes do you like?

Ive never tried this one but I must. Have you done Runyon Canyon? AMAZING!
We actually were near the Shenandoah mountains this weekend but it was too hot to hike. I'd like to hike Old Rag Mountain there in the fall when the leaves are changing and it's cooler.
We love going for hikes in mission trails :) there is so many more areas I would love to see down here, but my sciatica tends to get in the way.
I like your baby bucket list. Making your own clenaing products is super easy and much cheaper in the long run. I love making my own!
Our family lives in Ventura so we used to doing hikes closer to where they live but I LOVE Knapps Castle hike. The history behind the castle and the views into Santa Barbara are amazing!
I'd love to hear about your hikes..me and hubby love hiking and we are about 2 hours from LA so if you found a must do then PLEASE let us know!
We love hiking and hiked so much while we were out west because we had some great trails so close to us! It's beautiful, peaceful, and great exercise :)
A friend and I tried to hike this last weekend, but we somehow ended up on the wrong trail. Now we have to go back! If you are looking for another hike with gorgeous views, check out El Moro Canyon / Crystal Cove near Laguna Beach.
I love the photos from your hike!!
Living in Pennsylvania, there is umlimted amounts of hiking.
That's beautiful! I'm very jealous. We don't have much hiking trails where I live. Atleast not with that scenery!
It's fab to discover/re-discover where we live! I was sitting at a little ice cream shack on the ocean with my kids yesterday after a late afternoon swim. We looked around and decided how lucky we are to live here. After traveling 20 days across country in an RV, we appreciate it even more. I swear I will try to get to the Whaling Museum this summer...after 44 yrs, I think it's about time!!
Just wanted to say HELLO and let you know your old post made our 7 Link Challenge! It's still great information! http://www.shejustgotmarried.com/blog/2010/07/the-7-link-challenge
Wow, that's so gorgeous! What a view.
beautiful!
We love hiking in San Diego. Lots of great hikes here!
We recently hiked Malibu Creek State Park in the Santa Monica Mountains. You can see where they filmed the location shots for the TV show M*A*S*H and the forst ranch owned by Ronald Reagan. Plus some beautiful scenery. ;-)
Definitely plan on doing some hiking after I get my other knee replaced. I have arthritis so I've never been able to go but I'll be recovered by Spring and will be ready!
we have done Runyan...so far.. this is definitely on the next hike!! hmm..i might have to get that book to!
we must not be far from eachother! maybe an hour!
I really need to start hiking! I know there are tons of great places in the mountains just a short drive away. The title of this post reminds me of that (early 90s, I think?) song, "Walking in L.A... Nobody walks in L.A... walking in L.A.!" Know what I'm talking about??
Fun! I think we're going to have to try out a trail or two around here!
