(The title of this post should be sung, like that old Starz commercial that was to the tune of "Ode to Joy." Remember that one? Anyway...)
In the past week I've see three great films!
District 9
(Newlywed Next Door Rating: 4/5 Stars)
This movie is thrilling, fun, sad, funny, ironic, suspenseful, and fascinating. The back story of aliens alone warrants it own movie. And beneath the surface this movie is a powerful allegory of apartheid. There will definitely be a sequel.
The Time Traveler's Wife
(Newlywed Next Door Rating: 3/5 Stars)
You all know I was super excited to see this movie. It was pretty good, but not great. I think if I had not read and loved the book I would have been kind of lost as to why Claire loved Henry and probably wouldn't have liked the movie so much. Rachel McAdams was cute as ever, but Eric Bana came off as kind of cold.
The Business of Being Born
(Newlywed Next Door Rating: 5/5 Stars)
I rented this amazing documentary. Ricki Lake, after her own natural home birth, decided to take a serious look at America's maternity care system and created this film to shed light on how America views the birthing process. Although I've never been pregnant nor am I currently pregnant, this movie definitely made me examine my own pre-conceived (no pum intended) notions about birthing (wanting epidurals, c-sections, etc.). Seriously worth a watch!
Up next...
I'm now re-reading The Lovely Bones (I read it back in 2003) because the movie comes out in December! I'm so excited! I'm a little bit worried because it's pretty hard to depict heaven without being cheesy, but if anyone can do a good film interpretation, Peter Jackson can.
What did you think of these movies? What upcoming movies are you looking forward to?

I agree about The Time Traveler's Wife. If I didn't read the book I probably wouldn't have liked that much. The previews looked good but I felt like they left out alot of parts and there wasn't alot of depth to the characters like there was in the book.
I'd also give it a 3/5
I saw the business of being born...soooo good. It totally made me want a natural birthing proces...not sure if that will actually happen for me! haha.
I haven't seen Time Traveler's Wife yet but I'm hoping to see it this weekend.
I read the book, so I'm expecting to be a bit disappointed, but oh well.
I read The Lovely Bones way back when also, but for some reason I could not finish it. I think it got too dragged out for me. Now that I know the movie is coming out I should probably try again!
Cute review! Future Mr wants to see District 9 and I really want to see Time Travelers Wife!
Oh I totally agree with you on TTW. Bana did NOT make a good Henry for me either :(
Everyone I've heard mention the time travelers wife has been disappointed!
I agree about TTW. The book was so well-written, and it would've been hard to make the ENTIRE thing into a great movie. But I did like Rachel McAdams.
To people who haven't seen it yet: As long as you go into it knowing it's a movie made from a book, it'll be okay. :)
I saw District 9 and it held my interest ... not a huge sci-fi fan though, but my husband loved it.
On another note, have you seen Inglorious? It was a really good one, but a lot of dialogue.
I am interested in the Ricki Lake documentary!
*love the "newleyweds next door rating!"
I kept myself from reading time traveler's wife, because I had a feeling it wouldn't be as good as the book. I still need to see it though! We saw Inglorious Basterds and really enjoyed it (I was kinda surprised about that part!).
I just LOVE seeing movies!
They're making Lovely Bones into a movie? I don't know how I feel about that. Some books weren't meant to make it on to the big screen...
I agree completely with your thoughts on District 9 and The Time Traveler's Wife. I haven't seen the Ricki Lake documentary, but do think it sounds really interesting, and like something I'd enjoy
Loved Time Traveler's Wife. Hubby liked District 9 but thought it was slow.
i bought that book, (bones) years ago..and then never read it! i had no idea it was being made into a movie! Im actually having a hard time reading a Time Traveler...im 1/2 way thru..im sticking with it though!
I loved the business of being born! So good!
Lovely bones is a good book, but super sad. Be prepared! It bothered me for weeks after I read it.
The Lovely Bones was SUCH a good book!
District 9- really cool film!! I recommend to watch it.
I'm wanting to read the Lovely Bones as well. It was on my list and then I saw the preview for the movie and thought...oh gosh....I need to read it soon!
I really like District 9 but it was a bit gruesome for me. The overall story line though was fantastic.
I didn't know there was a book to "The Time Travelers Wife" until you mentioned it. I think I'll read the book and pass on the movie. The books are usually better!
I'll also have to check out The Lovely Bones!
I once started The Lovely Bones but never finished it. I am wondering if everybody who read the book will be dissapointed in the movie, it seems that happened with TTW. So now I don't know if I want to try and read The Lovely Bones before watching the movie or just not read it!
I saw the Time Traveler's Wife, and I thought it was ok. I did NOT read the book, and I assumed if I did read the book, I would have liked the movie less. I am almost always dissapointed with movies after I read the books!
I saw your post a few weeks ago about The Time Traveler's Wife, so I was curious to read your thoughts about the film!
So, Why DID Claire love Henry? YOu made it sound like there was something more not shown in the movie!! I am curious now!
I enjoyed Time Traveler's Wife...def not as good as the book. I'm starting The Lovely Bones too.
I had no idea they were making a movie out of the Lovely Bones!!
I read Lovely Bones so long ago...I don't really remember it. That might make for a better movie in my eyes since the movies usually don't measure up to the book.
My highschool friend Anny made and was in the movie. Amazing huh?
