No Shave November

November is the Mr's favorite month of year. And not just because his favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. It's because November marks a time honored, masculine tradition, "No Shave November".

Yes, it's a real phenomenon. Even Brad Pitt may be taking part.

For those who have not heard of it, No Shave November is month where guys grow a beard for the entire month too prove their manliness or something.

The Mr's been participating for years and I hate it.

It's too scratchy and it makes him look like tree-sitting hippy.

In past years I've tried to talk him out of it by telling him that I would participate too and not shave my legs. But I quickly realized that was impossible since I'm slightly OCD about shaving my legs.

Then I told him "No Shave November" = "No play November." But I couldn't keep that up for an entire month as Newlyweds!

This year I tried to appeal to his vanity and told him how bad he looks with beard by showing him pictures of Thanksgiving 2008, like this:

And this:

(I'm mean, I know, I know. But I don't think he looks very good with beard, do you?)

But he was unmovable. All I can do is to count down the 20 more days until this month is over.

Are any of your men participating in No Shave November? Do you like hairy look or the clean cut look on you guy?

*Edited to add: Thanks for the hilarious comments. I can't participate in No Shave November myself to get revenge on my hubby because I'm compulsive about shaving my legs every day. Why? Because I wear skirts to work most days and if I go more than a day or two without shaving I start to feel really gross, like I haven't showered. I know, I'm weird like that. My friends and family tell me that I'm totally crazy to shave almost every day, but it makes me feel happy, and that's what counts right? There, now you've learned a new quirk about me!

All I can say is thank goodness I'm married to a military man who is FORCED to shave!

He doesn't on weekends when he doesn't have to be on base and I HATE it! I don't think I could go a whole month. Two days and I'm threatening to shave him in his sleep!

Great blog!

Thank goodness my guy does not participate in this. His workplace would not go for that. He has to shave everyday. On three day weekends I can barely stand it!

Luckly my boyfriend has to keep his facial hair (the word is even kind of gross) a certain length for work. Maybe you can convince him to at least keep it groomed. It still hurts, but at least he doesn't look so much like a "tree sitting hippy" :)

I love my hubby scruffy. And he looks good with it! He prefers to be clean shaven. The beard chaffs his skins so we go back and forth.

I think this has a simple solution! No play is too difficult. But if you participate in the no-shave as well. You'd have to go all-out. No legs, no pits, no *other areas.* I bet he'd change his mind and shave that beard! It really is tit for tat. You think he looks bad with a beard, he'll think you look bad with hairy pits. Lesson learned. Problem solved!

I know a lot of men not shaving in November for a cause called Movember:
Money raised by the MOvember United States Fondation will go to The Prostate Cancer Foundation and Lance Armstrongs liveSTRONG.

We have sponsored a few male friends who are not shaving in order to raise money for this cause!! Google it!

I do not like facial hair at ALL Though! Luckily for me, my husband has to shave for his job!

My husband keeps a nicely trimmed beard all year round and about 10% of the time eh has a goatee. I love it!! I even told him he 'must' have the beard for the wedding...LOL, well trimmed of course.

My man doesn't shave from about the middle of October until December because he is a hunter. It's gross. He's got a beard of biblical proportions. It's sick. I have been meaning to take a photo for the blog .. I'll have to do that this week!

All I can say is I'm so glad I'm reading this at work and not somewhere where my boyfriend could read this and decide he needs to participate!
But it is kind of cute...
Maybe you could have no shave December and show him that it's just better when both sexes shave as usual???

Oh gosh, I hear you on this! I have to beg my husband to shave, I love the clean cut look!

I would hate if my boyfriend did this. Can't stand all that hair. Maybe you should ask him about you trying this out too...legs of course. lol

I lol'd at your tactics! Thankfully Tony does not participate. He'd be a bear by the end. He has a 5:00 shadow at 12:00!

My hubs has the opposite problem, with his head. he shaves off all his hair, and I love his hair, but he does it anyone, no matter how much I try to persuade him otherwise!

Wow I thought this was something my husband just made up. He quit shaving last week and is growing out his "winter coat" as he calls it.... crazy men.

Glad my hubby doesn't participate in this!

Good luck with the next 20 days. lol

Ew! No way would I let him participate in this. He doesn't shave on the weekends and can grow hair at a lions-pace so it gets scratchy real quick. I. Hate. It.

L is in the Police Academy and is forced to shave every day. I am so glad because I would die. Just keep counting down the days girl or next year schedule a photo shoot in Novemeber so he can't grow it out.

Husband is just now (at 27) starting to look like a grown man and not like an 18 year old, so for awhile I preferred that he keep some scruff (not shaped into a beard, or mustache, just scruff) because he looked way too boyish (and borderline nerdy) without.

I still like the scruff, and he shaved on oct. 31, to prep for no shave november, but last night he couldn't take it any more and shaved. I actually would have liked to see just how long I would like him scruffy (since scruffy would probably turn into a beard or something), but he just gets too itchy. So, no no shave November for us, although I was interested.

His pattern now is to shave, and then shave a week later, so I get to enjoy all sides of the debate- feel good smooth vs. sexy scruff.

Haha! This is funny. I have never heard of it before. However, my husband always has a beard, and I LOVE it that way. I don't like it when he does shave so I guess I would be sad if it was "shave it all November!"

maybe try participating in No Shave November, let your legs get really hairy! haha

Thank goodness we don't participate in No Shave Novemeber! I don't know how you stand it-I like a 5 o'clock shadow but that's about all I can stand!

Funny. My husband started doing this and I informed him that it would look bad in pics = (our Christmas family picture to be exact) and he finally shaved. I do like a gotee, and a little scruff, but no hippy, dirty looking facial hair! :)

Oh my... I thought this was just a random thing my brother-in-law did! hah! Funny to hear that others on opposite coasts are partaking in this!

lol.....I pray that Big Man doesn't catch wind of this

This is hysterical, lol!!

I'm so sorry about No-Shave November. I hope it goes by quickly for you.

I hate scruff in the sense that it hurts, but it looks good on some men (esp "The Guy").

I have been reading your blog for a few weeks now-- it's great! Several guys that I work with are also participating in MO-vember. I thought they had made it up, but I guess not!

You're beautiful!

I go back and forth from liking the scruff look to the clean-cut look. For something important, I like clean cut. But for everyday scruff can be fun!

thanks for your comment! That is just wild that you were reading Bonnie's blog and found mine but you also "knew" us....God works in such amazing ways! I just saw Marianne today.... small world.

My husband always does this during hunting season. It's like their chest pounding season. :)

Hilarious! Matt grew a beard over our honeymoon because he didn't shave once. He kept it for a few months maybe. I liked it at first...but then I was so ready for it to be gone. He looked so young when he shaved it all off though!

Luckily, Ty has to be clean shaven for his rotations. Or else I'm sure he would be participating. There are some of our 1st and 2nd year med students that are participating. I love it!

My hubby has always had a short, well-maintained goatee and mustache ever since I've known him. He looks weird without it. I like the scruff. Maybe it's a Southern thing!

This is so funny!!! I think you should instate the "No Play November", that beard would be gone honey!!! Some of my guy friends do this and I don't get it either!!

Crazy Shenanigans-JMO said...

Haha! I can totally relate to your view point. I am not a fan of facial hair either.

This is so funny to me! My husband has done this in the past and I haaaaate it. He finally realized that he looks like a fool with facial hour because it doesn't grow well on his face. Hopefully, your man will come around and see the light!
