Eurotrippin' Out

Remember a couple months ago when I joyfully announced that the Mr. and I were going to spend two blissful weeks in Europe touring Germany and Italy in May?

And after that I was merrily collecting travel books, inquiring about shoes, and planning our trip.

Then Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland in erupted. Halting air traffic to Europe for a week and throwing travel plans into turmoil.

All I could think was "thank goodness this happend now, rather than next month when we're trying to get into and out of Europe."

Then I learned about
Katla.

Katla is 10 times bigger neighbor of Eyjafjallajokul and is overdue an eruption. Based on past trends some geophysicists fear Eyjafjallajoku could be the trigger for Katla. In fact, every time Eyjafjallajökull has erupted in the past 1,000 years, Katla has followed soon after. Awesome.

Now I'm totally tripping out.

I've almost stopped planning out of fear that our trip won't happen.

Every morning when I get to the office I look up "Katla" on Google News to see if there has been any volcanic activity. So far, so good.

We leave in about 2.5 weeks. I'm just praying that Kalta will be calm until then.

And in case you're interested... here is our final itinerary...

I definitely took a lot of your suggestions into account. Special thanks to Becky and Latte Love for their advice and detail blog posts about Italy!

Did Eyjafjallajoku ruin any of your travel plans? Do you think I'm crazy to be worried about another volcanic eruption?

Hope Kalta stays calm and you guys have a wonderful trip! Sounds like so much fun... I've never been to Europe but would love to go one of these days!

I will pray for your trip. I know that would be a huge disappointment! My dad is an international pilot for Delta and was on vacation when the volcano erupted, so his work schedule didn't suffer. However, he'll be back and forth to Europe about 10 times in the next 2 weeks or so, so I'm hoping and praying that the other volcano won't erupt while he is in Europe-- or at all, for your sake! :)

I will pray that your travel plans don't come to a halt because of the volcano!

Hope you get there! In Florence you must eat at either Aqua al Due or ZaZa. Yum! And hit up the Prada outlet outside of FLorence if you have time :)

I've been reading for a little bit now and figured I would say hello. Your trip sounds great and I hope all goes smoothly! Rome is amazing-- I loved every second of being there. I recommend going up into the dome at St. Peter's. It was definitely worth the wait. Also, San Crispino gelato near the Trevi Fountain is amazing!

Sounds like you will have a wonderful trip!!! Hopefully the volcano will be at bay until after you get home.

Oh goodness, I hope your trip is not affected. Nobody ever thinks they will actually need trip insurance and it sounds like lots of people would benefit right now.

I made an English friend in San Fran on the cable car. Sophie (don't you just love that name!) had been stuck in the US for over a week past her travel time. I hope she made it home!

Hopefully Kalta holds off for a little while longer so it won't affect your trip. I am so jealous of your travel plans, I have always wanted to go to Italy. Sounds like you guys will have a great time!

I'm so jealous! This trip sounds awesome! I don't blame you for being worried about Kalta. I probably would be doing the exact same thing as you.

That's so scary, but seriously thank goodness you aren't there and stuck and can't come home. That would be terrible. And that's really scary about Katla and how it could erupt at any moment. I would be concerned also. I hope you guys are able to make it there and back in the time you planned.

Have so much fun in Europe! I absolutely loooove Italy. It is such an amazing place with so much history and culture. We had a great time just walking around aimlessly on the streets on Rome.

I'm hoping you won't have any problems!!! You are going to LOVE Italy!! Have some pizza and gelato for me (oh, and definitely try the pistachio gelato if you like pistachios - it looks nasty green but it's the BEST!). I can't wait to see your pics when you get back!!

Oh my goodness, I haven't even heard of this volcano! We are going to Europe at the end of June, and now you've got me worried...although, I wouldn't mine getting stuck in Europe for a little while!

I'm sure I'd be freaking out a little too. But there's nothing you can really do to stop it, and most likely you'll be fine and are just worrying over next to nothing

I will def. keep you and trip in my thoughts, and I would be the same way worrying. At our hotel we had thousands of people that were on Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holiday flights that were stuck here in the US for weeks after and some that said they might not get on a plane till May. I would be worried the same thing would happen to me if the other exploded and then I would be stuck on the other side of the pond.

But just keep checking it out!

I did a Mike's tour in Munich six years ago and it was so wonderful! It was the first time I had been on a bike in years and it was slightly terrifying, but so fun. Enjoy!
