I'm gone for work during the week a lot. And we have lots of other long weekend trips happening.
Last weekend we were in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Here's an aerial shot of where we spent most of our time.
That's right. Laaaazzzzy river, baby! We got upgraded to a poolside suite at the Westin Kierland. Thanks Starwood!
This Summer we're also going to Chicago, Boston, and the Oregon Coast. Whew!
AND this Fall we're going to New Orleans. I just booked our hotels and flights for a 4.5 day trip to The Big Easy!
I've never been to NOLA before, so I need recommendations from all of you southern gals! Where to eat? What to do? Other tips?

go to Acme Oyster House, French Quarter Market, Frozen Coffee at Cafe DuMonde, Voodoo tours and Cemetery tours. Bourbon Street stinks to high heaven, you can literally smell it blocks away. A River boat cruise. Swamp tour, but you would have to leave the city. Central Grocery for a muffaletta. I'll look out for festivals and let you know if I see anything coming up.
NOLA is my absolute favorite place in the world.
My top recommendation is Coops for Cajun food. Try the fried chicken, red beans and rice and a mint julep. We checked out other Cajun spots, but as many locales advised, nothing beat Coops.
The Louisiana Bistro is a great, intimate little place for a dinner date. The food is fabulous. It puts a gourmet twist on traditional NOLA eats at reasonable prices.
A cocktail at the Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monteleone is a must. I recommend The Bullet Sour. It's a specialty of the bartenders' and it's hands down my favorite cocktail EVER.
Take a ghost or city tour with Grand Tours New Orleans. Mike Indest, the guide, is a friend of ours and he is totally brilliant. His tours are less, er, "touristy" than you might get elsewhere.

New Orleans is my favorite city in the U.S.! You HAVE to go to Acme Oyster House, the line is long outside usually, but totally worth it. Plus we usually just grab a beer from the bar across the street to wait in line with ;) And the muffulettas at Central Grocery are to DIE for!
For NOLA, you MUST eat the beignets at Cafe du Monde. It's like a law.
As several people have already said, you definitely need to go to Cafe du Monde for doughnuts. I'm partial to plantations tours. Oak Alley is the most famous one, and easily in driving distance. But they even have tours that will pick you up in New Orleans and drive you to the plantation, so you don't have to worry about driving to get there.

1. Must eat at either Antoines of Galatoire's...Personally I prefer Antoines. I love the food there and I also love to take people there and get a tour of the place after the meal. Their wine cellar alone is worth the tour.

3. Central Grocery is a great place for a Muffuletta. Always a hit. 923 Decatur St new orleans
4. Highly recommend doing a swamp tour. Enjoyed this every time I have done this.
5. John Besh always makes great food. My friends who frequent his restaurants favor Domenica (Italian). Have yet to make it here but I have had multiple people recommend it.
6. Take time to wander the french market and quarter. But I also recommend taking a taxi to Magazine Street and spending the afternoon.

In New Orleans we loved Johnny's Po Boys - looks like a hole in the wall but seriously is the BEST po boy I've ever had!
In Chicago I love all the museums and we did a City Pass which was AWESOME. I highly recommend getting one there!
In Boston you can't skip the Sam Adams tour - it's free and has a beer tasting at the end!

If you love muffaletta, I recommend Central Grocery Co. (http://www.yelp.com/biz/central-grocery-co-new-orleans). If not, there's always beignets at Cafe Du Monde, but that's a given.
Just typed that and read above... looks like I'm not the only one who loves the muffaletta! I just stumbled upon that place when I was there, too. I had no idea it was something special. So glad I did!
Don't miss pizza at John beshs Dominica and dessert at sucre. Antoine's is the best for fancy dinner. Brunch at Brennan's. Sandwiches at mothers (John g with debris) or masperos. Creole creamery has great gelato. Walking around the quarter is fun and you see a lot. Shopping down magazine is a blast. La boulangerie is the best French bakery/coffee spot. Storyville on magazine for souvenir tshirts. My husband is from there and it's such an interesting city.
