Travel Tip Thursday - the Kickoff

Hi everyone! Work's been craaaazy this week so it's only fitting that I write this post from the San Jose Airport.

Today's Travel Tips have to do with quite possibly the MOST aggravating part of traveling for many people... getting through the security screening checkpoint.

Here are my tips to "fly" through airport security:

  • Make sure you follow the 3-1-1 rule for liquids in your carry-on bags: 3 oz or less containers of liquid, all contained within a 1 quart-sized clear bag. If you can't get all of your little liquids in there, then check your bag (that means NO water bottles or big shampoo bottles or anything much bigger than a small hotel-sized lotion)
  • Dress the part! Don't wear large metal belts or jewelry
  • Be sure to keep your boarding pass IN your hand when you go through the metal detector. Don't ask me why some airports/checkpoints check this and some don't (sometimes the only consistency is inconsistency)
  • You'll have to take your shoes off, so wear ones that are easy to get on and off (I prefer flip-flops)
  • Take your laptop out of the bag and put it in a bin by itself (don't put your shoes or jacket in that same bin with the computer)

I started with this topic because as a weekly traveler, I can get really annoyed with clueless people at security.

Stay tuned for upcoming weeks! I'm going to talk about: how to save serious $$$ traveling, earn free stuff, fit two weeks worth of clothes in small bag, and get the best accommodations.

See you in the friendly skies!

I'm looking forward to more tips! Especially how to pack light. I have a hard time with that one.

looking forward to the tips - last year I traveled pretty frequently for work, so I feel your pain on those security lines and clueless people!

I am pretty sure I am the traveler you don't like..but only because I do not travel much :) Can you explain the liquid rule? Can I not put the big bottles of shampoo in my luggage?

the hubby and I were those clueless travellers, lol. Our honeymoon was the first time either of us had flown... We had to re-do the security thing for both the laptop mistake and boarding pass mistake. lol.

Omg yes! Taking off the shoes and taking out the laptop is by far the worst!!

Frighteningly enough after hopping on planes once a month to see Bumbee for 2 years it has all become second nature to me.

Hi big sis! I love reading these and wanted to complain about the "casual travelers" who seem to think they belong in the "expert traveler" line in those airports that have attempted to create efficiency. As a frequent traveler I am very annoyed by those non-experts who hold up the expert line. Keep up the great work! Excited for tips on how to pack lightly because I sure don't...
