Well friends, today I finally used my new sewing machine! I watched the instructional DVD that came with it and learned all about how to thread the needle and do the stitches! I did break one needle in the process (oops!), but overall it was awesome!
Here are some of my practice stitches:

The machine I ended up getting is the Singer Tradition Sewing Machine. I had debated about getting an expensive one to start with or starting on a simple one and then upgrading. I went for the cheapy option and will upgrade later. Here's my little guy:
So far it does all I want it to!
So my next question is: how do I get better at sewing? I don't have anyone to teach me. Should I take a class? Does anyone know of any good instructional DVDs I could pick up?

I got my first Singer for Christmas too! I also used the DVD to help me a bit. Since learning the very basics, I've gotten a little more comfortable with the basics. I'd still love to take a class at a local shop, but I think experimenting is the best way to get better. Over my spring break, I'm going to *try* to make some curtains for my classroom. Good luck!
I know that JoAnn Fabrics offers classes for fairly cheap. I've never taken them though...I've taken their cake decorating classes and they rock...

I want to learn how to sew but I sucke in middle school at it so I don't imagine I'd be much better now.
I took sewing lessons with one of my friends. It was so helpful! I think we did 4-6 lessons, once a week. I would definitely recommend a class.
I'm fairly new to sewing too. I can make basic things now like pillows and curtains. I did have my mother-in-law to teach me basics but the thing that helped the most was just practicing. The hardest thing for me is keeping my stitches straight. I've ruined a few projects because I couldn't sew in a straight line. Looking at books with good illustrations really helped me too. Just buy really cheap fabric and test out all the functions on your machine and feel comfortable. Good luck!
You may really enjoy taking a class, especially when you begin trying to use patterns. Trying to decipher a pattern can be like learning another language, so having someone to lead you through it a few times makes a world of difference.
I miss my sewing machine! It's sitting in my parents' attic.

I would say that practice makes perfect, but take it down to a local shop that offers classes, that way you get some extra tips from experts. Practice first though so you don't look like a total rookie! =]
That's great you are using your sewing machine!! I started sewing when I was 16 and it just takes practice!! (That is so lame!) But you just have to keep trying to make things and see how it goes! Once I got the basics down I took a class where you bring your machine and you learn to do fancy zippers and jean hems and stuff and it made it so easier!! Good luck!!
