Black Tie Optional?

I just got the beautiful invitation to my friend's summer wedding. On the bottom it of it read "black tie optional." Now, I know for a wedding this really means optional, but I'm guessing that a lot of men will wear tuxes. And since I'm a sucker for guys in tuxes, I told the Mr. that I think it's time that he invest in a tuxedo. Plus we're probably going a cruise for Christmas and New Years and he'll need one for that too (more on that later).

Do any of your guys own tuxes? Do you have any tux buying advice? Like where should he look to buy one? Men's Wherehouse? Macy's? Boutique? What brands are good quality for a good price?

Hubs has one, but it is now a little snug. I think we may have to get him a little bigger jacket. We got it at Macys! It is really nice!

Chris isn't much of a tux kinda guy, but we did invest in an incredible suit from JCrew. :)

I totally agree that every man needs a good tux. My husband fights me on this, unfortunately, and we have been renting when a tux is necessary. I am convinced this is the year to buy one.

I think it really depends on how much use he will get out of it. If you're thinking once or twice a year, somewhere like Men's Warehouse or Macy's are a great place to start, because you can get a respectable tuxedo without breaking the bank... and unless you have the money to spend, there isn't a need to go all out if it's not something he'll be wearing frequently. My husband bought an expensive one when he had a reason to wear tuxes frequently, but now that he does not (and he became a bit too 'plump' for his previous tux) he just went with a basic $350 Ralph Lauren because it just wasn't worth the investment to spend more if he's not going to pull it out of the closet more than once a year.

every man needs a good suit, but only invest in a Tux if he is going to wear it more than once - they are not cheap! I would stick with high end department stores like Macy's or Barneys

I tried to get my husband to buy his tux for our wedding (something about renting for the most important day of your life seemed weird to me) but he didn't think he'd need it afterward. I think it really depends on how often he would wear it. But, then again if you rent two or three times you could pay for it.

If it's an outside-summer wedding, I'd go more relaxed.. definitely no tie.

Mr. H has found some great suits at Dillards in the past. He has a black pinstrip Ralph Lauren suit that is gorgeous from Dillards - but about 3 years ago. He hasn't gotten a new suit in awhile, and the next one he will buy is a khaki suit for our wedding in October! We are going to check out Brooks Brothers.

My BF and my former BF both had luck at Men's Wearhouse from a pricing standpoint. They got suits, not tuxes, but the results were swoonworthy.
